When did you get your musical start? When did you know you wanted to pursue it as a career? I began piano lessons when I was 7 and from there it grew naturally. I was a total band geek and played alto saxophone in the school band, eventually becoming drum major of the marching band. I started making a career in music when I was in college and started playing throughout Boston. I recorded my first two albums there and I haven’t looked back. I always knew this was what I wanted to do and it was while watching the Beatles movie Help! that I knew it for real.
Tell us about your new single, “Rock Me To Heaven”. What was the inspiration for this track? “Rock Me To Heaven” is a song written and originally recorded by my producer Gino Vannelli. This song has a lot of history and meaning for me. It’s on his album These Are The Days and I have wonderful memories from high school with this song. He asked me to redo it and it’s a huge honor for me. My version and his sound nothing alike and I couldn’t be more proud of how it came out.
What was the writing and recording process like? Did you face any challenges? The writing process for this album is unlike anything I’ve done before. Gino is really pushing me and has taken me out of my comfort zone. What you’ll hear is an emphasis on story-driven lyrics and melodies that bring out my voice.
While recording there is such care to detail. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s so precise and the quest to maximize your output. It’s an honor to be working with a childhood idol, but the care that he’s giving me is even more incredible.
How does this single set you apart from your past work? From the first note it’s obvious that this is a new sound for me. It’s more organic, it’s less in your face and certainly a bit more mature. It’s pop at its core but there’s an element of soul and Nashville that wasn’t there before. I still have my rock roots so of course that’s there too, but overall this is much more of a vocalist album.
What is next for you in 2016? I’m hard at work finishing up demoes and we’ll be back in the studio soon finishing up the album. I can’t wait for everyone to hear the new music! We’re working on getting some shows booked too so stay tuned to http://jamiealimorad.com for more info.
