If Sam Smith and Lady Gaga had a love child, you would get Mathew V. This 18 year old songwriter is officially making his debut as an independant artist, and there is a lot to be excited about. Vancouver born, Mathew V is at the centre of some serious hype and the debut single isn’t even released yet. Mathew took a few minutes to talk to us about his music career thus far, and the anticipation of his new release!
Entertwine: Could you tell us about your musical background? Who or what inspired you to begin writing music in the first place? Well, at the age of two, the first song I ever sang was “Man! I Feel Like a Woman” by Shania Twain. From birth I was infatuated by larger than life pop stars and Top 40 chord progressions. At the age of 7 my parents put me into classical music where I trained in opera for 8 years. I ended up forgoing my classical training for songwriting because classical music began to seem claustrophobic for me. Pop music is allowed me to express myself and it’s always where my heart has been.
What was it like growing up in Vancouver, Canada? What is the music scene of your hometown like? Vancouver is an amazing city. I will always brag about Vancouver wherever I go because I really think it is one of the most amazing cities in the world. With that being said……The canadian pop music scene is slightly dry, which is why I ended up relocating to London, England to record my music.
What experiences and events inspired the writing and recording of your debut single ‘I’m A Bitch’? We ended up recording around 6 songs to choose between for the premiere single. As soon as I sat down and wrote “I’m a Bitch” I knew that it was the song I wanted to make my debut with. “I’m a Bitch” isn’t written about a person (which most people would assume) but rather about an idea. I wanted the song to break down societal barriers that have been built around the word “Bitch.” I wanted to make a statement, using the word as a way to empower people, rather than a way to degrade women.
What was it like working with CMYK Productions on the music video for your debut single? When will the video be released? Working with CMYK has been amazing. I had wanted to work with them for a while, but the right moment had never presented itself. When it came time to choose film companies, it was an easy decision for myself and my team to make. I am a very visual artist and they were able to bring the images in my head to life. The music video releases on May the 12th, as well as the single.
What does the remainder of 2015 hold in store for Mathew V? Do you have any upcoming performances? Are you currently working on an EP or album? The rest of 2015 is looking very exciting! Definitely some more music in the works. Creatively I am pushing myself, expanding artistically and working with some very talented innovators. There is a lot of hard work ahead but I couldn’t be more excited to see what the future holds.
