The next big thing is something that’s often said in the music media press, but it’s never been truer than the case of Al-x. When you take a different approach to music that’s dear to so many, approaching it with unrestrained passion and creativity, it’s hard for the world not to notice. Al-x moves comfortably in her songs between the world of pop music, with an electro twist, all the way to classic acoustic guitar based songs brought to life with her angel’s voice. Sometimes she even mixes both genres in a single song and comes out with something much greater than either part. After steadily building her international fan base with three EPs and countless live shows to her credit, she released her first music video this summer and is back with an unprecedented medley video which was just released yesterday – we got the inside scoop on some of Al-x’s work, as well as the medley video, which you can view below! Enjoy!

Entertwine: How long have you been writing music? What inspired you to pursue a career in music in the first place?

Al-x: I strongly believe people should do what they love and follow their dreams. Life is too short not to.

I’ve been writing music since I was a teenager. I fell in love with performing when I was 5 and have explored various ways to express myself through dance, acting, singing, writing and drawing. I find that writing music & performing it gives me the most pure high and allows me to connect with people in a unique and beautiful way.

What does a day in the life of Al-x look and sound like?screencapside

As I’m sure is the case with most people in a creative field, my days don’t tend to look the same. I always spend some time being creative and some time reaching out to people on social media. My ideal days are those when I feel especially inspired and create or produce a song that lifts me up.

What has been your experience within the different music scenes of Los Angeles?

LA has a lot of interesting music scenes and of course a ton of creative people of all different sorts. On the one hand, there is a lot of negativity and rampant pay-to-play, but there is also so much talent, it’s a shame it can’t all be seen. Though I play pop music, I’ve certainly performed in venues more directed toward other genres like rock at the Whisky and House of Blues, or folk at smaller venues. There is a high sense of competition here, but there are those times when you find a group of people being supportive and encouraging. I think you have to have a good sense of confidence to wade through it, and also humility. While I love LA, I’m really curious about exploring more of the world and various cultures of music!

What was it like filming the music video for your song ‘On the Dark Side’? What experiences or events led to the writing and recording of this composition?

Well it was a dream come true. I’ve wanted to shoot a music video since I was a little girl. I’ve been lucky enough to perform in amazing places, record in incredible studios and meet some of my idols, but this was definitely special. We spent months working on the concept for the video and had a successful shoot, even if it was kind of a whirlwind! I’ve had experiences going into the darker places within myself, and experiences coming out of them. The song itself just sort of “happened” all at once. It just flowed out, from the moody synths to the lyrics and melody. With the video we explored the duality within oneself, which I think everyone can relate to. I think there’s pressure in the music industry to just present one side or “brand”, but I’m interested in the many sides to each person – and that actually relates to my latest project as well.

You’ve released three EPs (“Let’s Start Tonight”, “Self-Titled”, & “Taking Me Over”), correct? Could you give us some insight into the significance of each? How has your sound matured, differed, or expanded throughout the realization of these projects?

What a great and complex question. Wow…

I’m sure we’re all different people than we were 5-10 years ago to some extent. I’m not the person I was when I wrote the 1st EP, though I like her. I had a more limited sense of self, which led me to create some great songs (in my opinion), but with experience, there comes a confidence and more of a freedom of self.

From the beginning I liked to express different sides of myself, and have always included acoustic, pop and dance tracks on every release. Over time I’ve come more into my own voice and have created a more polished sound. I’d like to think you can hear growth from one to the next, and onto the as yet unreleased work. At the same time, I’d like to believe you could easily identify all of them as Al-x songs.

Between the 2nd & 3rd EPs, I was signed to an indie label. There I learned more about production and had access to amazing equipment. By the time the 3rd EP came out, I’d gone through some life-changing experiences and wanted to encourage the positive, like “live life like you had just one day” in “Let’s Start Tonight” and to really cherish moments as they happen as with the ballad “Dawning of the Day”.

The great thing about music is that it’s constantly evolving and changing, so as we find ourselves in new places in our lives, we can create and explore whole new worlds. And we can suddenly relate to certain music we might not have understood at some earlier point.

What does 2015 hold in store for Al-x? Could you tell us about the new project you plan to release tomorrow (December 15, 2014)?

First of all, thank you for the great interview and insightful questions!

I’ve really been wanting to tour, so I have my fingers majorly crossed that it will happen in ’15! Aside from that, I plan to release another EP in the 2nd part of the year. I’m aiming to get some more song placements in TV shows, & movies, make more videos and hope to keep expanding my fan-base. The fans I have are awesome!

The project out on Dec 15th is sort of an early holiday gift – and it’s something that has NEVER been done before…

I had success with a cover song on my last EP, so I thought I might do another. It’s a great way to be creative in a different form and a way to reach some new people. But so many people have posted cover songs of everything you could think of on youtube.

So I composed a mega medley instead! It’s of Madonna songs, a song from each of her 12 previous studio albums, leading up to her 13th album due out next year. In under 5 minutes, I take the listener on a journey, with one song leading into the next with my own unique acoustic interpretations of these huge hits. In the video for it, I draw on the inspiration of “reinvention” as I transform myself into over a dozen different looks.

I hope people will Share the medley video from my youtube channel Youtube.com/thealexmusic521 and soundcloud https://soundcloud.com/alexmusicsite. Also please follow me on social media & sign up on my website www.alexmusicsite.com!
