Cali C is a Finland born-and-raised singer/dancer currently living in New York City, doing what she loves: making music and dancing. Her new single “Real” dropped in February, 2015 and is already making major noise amongst her listeners. Cali C is currently in the studio finishing up her soon to be debut album, and we got a chance to catch up with her to see how things are shaping up! Enjoy our interview with Cali below!

Could you tell us a bit about your musical background? What was it like growing up in Finland? What is the significance of your moniker?

Music has always been very important to me. I started studying music in a very young age and even though I never thought I’d make a career out of it, it’s always been one of my big interests. Growing up in Finland was pretty ordinary I guess. I pretty much grew up “in the sticks” so my life was never too crazy over there. My artist name doesn’t really have a deep meaning… I was spitballing with possible artist names and wanted something that no one else has, that has my first names initials and is easy to remember.

What does a day in the life of Cali C look and sound like? What’s the biggest difference between living in New York City and living in your home country?

I usually start my day by going to gym, and it continues with dance rehearsals or shows and/or writing lyrics and recording “sketches” at the studios. The biggest difference between living in NYC and living in Finland is… well, everything! I can’t say there’s anything in Finland that I’d find in New York and vice versa.

Could you tell us about some of the most exciting or memorable events you’ve participated in as a dancer? What about as a vocalist and performing artist? How do these two different career paths support one another?

Wow that’s a tough one… One of the best experiences as a dancer was being a backup dancer for an artist called Xstal in Las Vegas. It was definitely memorable. To be honest, I haven’t done that much live performing as a vocalist so far making music has been a way to me to make art and find what it is that I can do and want to do. Being a dancer for recording artists actually inspired me to start making things happen for myself.

You’re currently working on the songs that will make up your debut album, correct? What experiences and events inspired the writing and recording of these songs? What can you tell us about the two songs (‘Real’ and ‘Vegas High’) you’ve already released?

Yes, that’s correct. “Vegas high” was actually inspired by Las Vegas the city itself I lived there last summer. It’s more like a club song that was fun to make, “Real” on the other hand has a deep feeling behind it. “Real” was inspired by a relationship I once was in. It’s about the feeling you have when you’ve just put up with too much and don’t know if it’s worth it anymore.

Aside from working on your debut album, what else does 2015 hold in store for Cali C?

I’m working on a music video for “Real” right now. After that there’s been some discussion about performing opportunities that haven’t quite been locked in yet. It’s gonna be a good year!
