Chaz DeFranco is an R&B/Hip-Hop artist out of Sherbrooke, Canada. This young artist, who claims his music is inspired by, “Life, pretty girls, and troubled relationships,” certainly isn’t having much trouble getting new and unique content out to his listeners. Fresh off the VEVO release of his first official music video for No Evil In Her, Chaz’ first EP “Bolt From The Blue” is up for pre-order on iTunes and will officially release on November 11th. We got to know Chaz a bit better and ask him about his experience recording his first video, and what fans can expect from his new EP!
Entertwine: Could you tell us a bit about your background? When did you begin to pursue music as a career?
Chaz DeFranco: Hmm, I guess it just came naturally, whether it was writing short stories or lyrics, I’ve always liked to put pen to paper. Writing is really therapeutic for me too – I can say anything that I want when I write, there’s no barrier, there’s no limit because it’s an art. Then as far as singing and rapping goes, there was definitely a learning curve there – and I’m still learning everyday – but I have some people around me that are really helping me to get better at it. One of them is Bobby Bisciglia, he’s an amazing singer/producer from Montreal and he’s the guy I worked with from the begining, he’s very talented, you should really take a look at what he’s doing!
What is it like living in Sherbrooke, Canada? What can you tell us about the music scene of Sherbrooke?
CDF: Wow, well, the music scene in Sherbrooke is pretty non-existant, at least for the genre I’m doing. You don’t see a lot of R&B/Hip-Hop artists doing their thing in English over here. Sherbrooke is a small, mostly French-speaking city. But of course Montreal is really close by, Toronto isn’t too far away either and both cities are really home to some amazing talents.
What life experiences and events influenced the writing and recording of your debut EP “Bolt From the Blue” (to be released November 11, 2014)? Are ‘Go’ and ‘Give It Up’ (tracks uploaded to your Soundcloud page) included on the album?
CDF: A lot has influenced this project. Too much to actually answer this appropriately. But I’ve started a blog a few days ago which will serve the purpose of explaining it all. So visit chazandallthatjazz.tumblr.com if you want to learn more about me, my influences, my lifestyle and how the project came together. And yes, “Go” and “Give It Up” will be included on the EP.
What went into the filming of the music video for your song ‘No Evil In Her’? What was it like working with Bekura Houle on this project?
CDF: It was great, I mean the guy really knows what he’s doing, he’s been in this business for years doing everything from documentaries to TV shows, TV ads, movies, you name it! He even was director of photography for Barbara Streisand when she went on the Oprah Winfrey show back in 2003. And I can’t pass up the opportuniy to also shout out my artistic director Mélanie Truchon. She was the artistic director to multiple videoclips from various artists including Celine Dion, Montreal-based singer Corneille and very popular French rapper Booba. I mean, she really has a way to make the whole set-up look amazing, so props to her!
What do the early months of 2015 hold in store Chaz DeFranco musically?
CDF: I can’t say much for now, but there’s a few things that I already have planned. There will be another EP dropping in 2015, look for in the 2nd quarter of the year!
