Born in Charleston, SC, Kim Jefferson moved to the west side of Chicago at the age of four. As a young girl in church, she discovered she had a God-given gift to sing. Kim always felt she had an obligation to use her gift for a greater purpose. Shortly afterward, she was greatly known as Kaye Fox. Kaye quickly rose to become one of the elite artists of Chicago. She found a powerful creative chemistry in working with Grammy Award winning producer No ID (Artium/Def Jam), who at the time was already considered to be the godfather of Chicago Hip Hop from his classic work with Common and other artists. Kaye Fox is a rare breed of artist that is able to create visions of complete songs and bring them to life along with her production team. Welcome her to the legacy. Enjoy our interview with Ms. Kaye Fox below!

Entertwine: When did you realize singing was your gift? When did you know it was what you wanted to do?

Kaye Fox: I realized singing was my gift when I was 7 yrs old. I knew I wanted to make it a career at 13. That’s when I did my first studio session.

ET: Who are a few of your influences when it comes to writing and singing (or even performing)? Why?

KF: Some of my influences as a writer are Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Marvin Gaye, Babyface, Lauryn Hill, NeYo, Diane Warren, Curtis Mayfield, Ashford & Simpson.. The list goes on and on I tried to keep studying… Singing wise Whitney Houston and Kim Burrell are my favorites. I feel they are all awesome at their craft and if I can take a little from each I can be on hell of an artist!! That’s what I try to do.

ET: What was it like working with Grammy Award Winning producer No ID? What valuable lessons and tips did you take from this experience?

KF: It’s always a pleasure working with NoI.D. We go way back so it’s like being home. The greatest lesson is just to be ready to take advantage of your opportunities!

ET: Tell us about your upcoming EP, “Here I Am,”. What does this EP mean to you and what was most challenging about the recording process? Which song would you say is your current favorite?

KF: The project is a few of the songs that I wrote and co-produced while I was working with other artist. I was still able to record songs that we about what was goin on in my life. And it is good to be able to put out a body of work that represents the sound and style that I have as an artist. What was most challenging was choosing what songs to put out first because I have so many and wanted to make sure I chose wisely. My favorite right now is “Hear I Am” the title track.

ET: What are your plans for the rest of 2014? Tours, shows, releases, etc?

KF: My plan is to tour this summer and to put out another project by the end of summer beginning of fall. EP will be out on April 14th!!! Video for “Hear I Am” the single drops April 21st!
